Quick Answer

Yes — Chinese GB grades can replace most ASTM, JIS and EN grades in general construction. The workhorse mappings: Q235B ≈ A36 ≈ SS400 ≈ S235JR, and Q355B ≈ A572 Gr.50 ≈ SM490A ≈ S355JR. Verify five things before substituting: yield strength, weldability (CEV), impact-test temperature, product dimensions and the certification path. We supply the nearest GB grade with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate, or mill dual-certified material stamped to both standards.

China produces roughly half of the world's steel, rolled predominantly to GB standards. Buyers in ASTM, JIS or EN countries often assume a foreign grade means a foreign mill — in practice, sending us your grade list is usually cheaper and faster, provided the substitution is done properly. Here is exactly how it works.

GB ↔ ASTM ↔ JIS ↔ EN Cross-Reference Table

The grades below cover the bulk of structural and mechanical orders we export. Yield values are minimums for the common thin-product range and vary slightly with thickness and standard edition — final compliance is always per the mill test certificate.

One Real Difference: Section Dimensions

Grade equivalence does not mean shape equivalence. GB H-beams (GB/T 11263, from 100×100 to 900×300 mm) have their own flange and web proportions — they are not interchangeable dimension-for-dimension with IPE, HEA/HEB or ASTM W shapes. Three practical options:

  1. Re-engineer to GB sizes — usually the cheapest; capacity is matched, fabrication drawings are adjusted.
  2. Match load capacity — we propose the nearest GB section with equal or better section modulus.
  3. Compare weights first — our GB weight tables and H beam weight calculator cover both systems in kg/m, so you can price the switch before committing.

Plates, coils, angles, channels and pipes are far simpler: dimensions are nominal (thickness × width, kg/m by size), so only the grade mapping matters.

The 5-Point Substitution Check

  1. Strength level — target minimum yield and tensile within a safe margin. Going one step up (e.g. Q355B offered against A36) is normally acceptable; never down.
  2. Chemistry & weldability — compare carbon equivalent (CEV). GB structural grades are generally at or below their foreign twins on CEV; welding procedures carry over.
  3. Impact-test temperature — the letter codes map directly: Q235B ≈ S235JR (room temperature +20 °C), Q235C ≈ J0 (0 °C), Q235D ≈ J2 (−20 °C). If your service is cold, order the higher letter, not the base grade.
  4. Product form & dimensions — per the section above; plates and coils are straightforward, profiles need a size decision.
  5. Certification path — decide between a nearest-equivalent MTC (fast, standard) and mill dual certification (adds lead time and ~US$3–8/t, satisfies code-governed documentation).

Worked Example: "ASTM A36 Plate, 12 mm"

A quotation request arrives specifying ASTM A36, 12 mm plate, 20 tons, FOB Huangpu. Our workflow:

  1. Map the grade: Q235B is the GB equivalent (yield 235 vs 250 MPa, tensile 400–520 vs ≥400 MPa — within the accepted substitution band for general construction).
  2. Flag the gap honestly: if the end use is a code-governed structure, we offer mill dual-certified Q235B/A36 so the certificate names A36 explicitly.
  3. Document it: every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate listing heat chemistry and mechanical results; SGS/BV/TUV inspection against the A36 requirement set is available before loading.
  4. Price it: GB Q235B typically lands 5–15% under the A36-equivalent import price, before the freight saving of sourcing in Foshan.

When NOT to Substitute — Our Honest List

We decline substitution in these cases even when a grade looks close, because the paperwork (not the steel) is the constraint:

  • Classification-society hull steel — AH36/DH36 must carry society endorsement (ABS/LR/DNV/CCS); we supply actual ship plate, not substitutes.
  • Low-temperature impact service — if service temperature goes below 0 °C, order Q355C/D or the EN J2/K2 equivalent with the correct test temperature; a B/JR grade is not a substitute regardless of yield.
  • Pressure equipment under ASME or PED — the code names exact permitted grades; substitution is a legal non-starter without the engineers' variation approval.
  • Proprietary OEM specifications — automotive and machinery specs tied to one mill's chemistry window.
  • Contracts naming the foreign standard as contractual — handled by dual certification or a formal variation order, never silently.
